Herne Bay finds

Hi everyone. This is the area where we hope you can post a photo (or more) of your finds from the Herne Bay Hunt on 21st April.
It will be great to see the range of fossils found (especially the variety of shark teeth) and we can then help to identify a few!

I'm kicking off with a small batch (the only ones I found! in fact) but I'm pleased with these. L to R. 1. Odontaspis sp. (a sand shark), 2. Myliobatis (eagle ray), 3 and 4. Possibly Striatolamia (sand tiger shark) but both pretty worn by the tides) 5. ?

Turtle carapace

Some great finds Craig! We all wondered why we got so few and now we know!
You'll have to go to the naughty corner for the first hour at Folkestone and give us all a head start.


I think the majority of these are of Striatolamia, a sand tiger shark. The larger tooth in the top photo, fourth from left is possibly Hypotodus, another type of sand tiger shark.

There's a fish tooth in there as well.

Thanks for this info . Just had a look at Aetobatus images and you're spot on!

If you got along to Herne Bay, for our last hunt. you'll probably find this chart useful for helping to identify your finds.

It's taken from an old Deposits magazine (Issue 10) and shows the sharks teeth and other fossils commonly found at Beltinge, Herne Bay.
It's a good article and worth downloading (from UKGE http://www.depositsmag.com) for only £1.20 along with a lot of other useful content.
