    Please could someone tell me what these are - why they form in layers etc and why they are in our garden!

    I know nothing about these things so I'd like to apologise if this is a well-known, straightforward answer.

    To be honest it's virtually impossible to tell without knowing the stratigraphy in question. Layers can form from huge numbers of processes, and each can lead to vastly different results. These are not anything I recognise though. The first one has either an ammonite or nautiloid impression, and both blocks have burrows throughout them, but I can't say much else atm I'm afraid

    No problem Smile I'd say they're both layered concretions (nodules) of some kind, but couldn't say what type
