Here is the reason why have had to get a serious prep tool.

Gleviceras Victoris, Apoderoceras Limestone, Radstock.

My dremel engraver has done well, but some of the heavily calcified areas of the matrix are ridiculously hard!

Wow that's crazy!!! I've got some heavy duty fossils myself but still need the tools to prep them :/ Can't do much to Nellie without an abrasive (she's too big to fit under the guard of the unis' one!) And a few blocks of ammonite that will take plenty of hours of air penning!

It'll take a while, but I'm really looking forward to it

I guess a dental drill would work, but I imagine they are pretty expensive. I've done a lot of prepping with a Dremel engaver the beauty with the dremel is that you can make your own bits, I sharpened a masonry nail and made a spade type bit for it, both worked well on all but the hardest matrix. A normal rotary dremel is great to have also, for polishing and removing some matrix.

Take a look at UKGE, they also sell electric engravers and rotary tools.

Engravers are good; I would recommend them for beginners. They might be a bit heavy, but they do take matrix of fairly fast. I would not recommend them for small dedicate fossils though.

Ahhhh so the ukge one I guess is a bit more heavy duty than the dremel engraver, as mine is quite light, small and good with delicate fossils, so perhaps it might be good to invest in both Ermaster.
