My Amber.. Take Two!

During my time off over the summer I'll be booking the camera-microscope room for a day or two so I can get some proper pictures of my own instead of some I've borrowed from the seller(s).. This is the best I could get by taking pictures through a regular microscope with my usual camera..:





(I've got plenty more than just these, there was a thread somewhere with the 'borrowed' pictures..
I'll be heading into the prep room a couple of times as well, so prepare for more pics of prepped ammonites and stuff

i would love to find some amber of my own but i dont know any places were i can localy

You can find tiny scrapes (barely 1mm and very very very very rare) in most terrestrial deposits worldwide, but it will pretty much never have anything in..

Mine is mostly bought Baltic amber, from Latvia/Estonia/Germany, some from Madagascar (copal not amber) and a little Dominican Amber..
If you want I can point you in the direction of a couple of good sellers..

I do have some British amber in my collection, but it does not contain an insect. My Baltic stuff has insects in. Found amber in Sweden some years ago.

Yep, got a fair few spiders, I generally preferentially bought them compared to the mites/flies/ etc (I have a cockroach as well!), just because spiders are cool
I'll probably be booking the microscope lab for Thursday to get the pictures, but here are the original pics from the buyers of most of my amber.. I'll be taking more/more detailed pics later this week..

Rightey ho, I'm in the camera room atm, getting plenty of pics, I won't upload anything straight away when I'm done, as I'm going to try the image stacking software to get more depth of field in the pictures..

Here's a taster, before I get on the stacking software:

All of the Madagascan copal ants (any many of the other insects too) seem to have rather fun googly eyes!

They eye is amazing - how old is this copal?

Your insects are rather nice. The eye is amazing!

Some madagascan stuff can be as young as 2000 years old, but lots is much older.

Copal is generally between 10,000 and 1-2,000,000 years old, Dominican is around 20 something million and Baltic is around 45-55 million (the three types I have), but there around 200 recognised different types of amber/copal..

Right, they're all up on Facebook now (link in Sig- all fossil album are public ), I'll post them up here later today.. Only slight problem is that facebook doesn't work on my laptop anymore for soem stupid reason, and the uni computers won't allow me to open images in new tabs so I can't hotlink them... And I cba to upload 46 pictures to servimg one at a time.. I'll upload the best ones later if facebook keeps being stupid...

Finally, the Uni. computer suite is open again so I can start posting some stuff! (My laptop is still having problems with Facebook, and I can't be bothered with uploading 200 images one at a time to an image hosting site (I need to find one that allows the upload of more than one image..)).
So, here's the fist load of images, the flies & gnats;

Ants, beetles & other insects (Inc. a cockroach!)

And finally, the spiders!
(The first 3 are of the same specimen, as are 4 and 5, 6 and 7, 12 and 13, 14 and 15).

If you wish to know whether a specimen is from Baltic amber or Madagascan copal, just ask .
The white coating on some specimens is from liquids and gasses inside the arthropods which leak out after they were fully coated in the sap.

There is also this:, which was in one of my two pieces of Dominican amber (the other has no inclusions)


Both pictures ore of the same specimen (one above the other, from the same side), but I don't know what it is.. It's approx. 3-4mm long. Only thing I can think of at the moment is that it could be plant remains.
