Re: Amber with fossils
nice pieces. I'd like to polish some amber, I imagine though time consuming it must be very satisfying to reveal whats within. The detail in amber specimens blows my mind.

Re: Amber with fossils
All the photos you guys see in this album is from same amber..
here is the info :
Dominican Amber with many Fossils.. From Santiago.
33 x 30 mm . Weight is 28.92ct
Freeform shape - sanded & polish by hand.. I used no machines..
first i make some small "windows" that i polish.. study them really hard.. measure them from all angels.. when i am sure what to do.. i start to sand them down by hand.. polish new small windows to make sure i keep the fossils.. sand down more bit by bit.. all by hand.. when i am finish shaping them.. i start to use buffer-blocks on them.. go over then a few times more with finer and finer grit.. until i polish them with a polishblock.. (the same type the ladies use to polish nails )... it takes a long time to do it.. but i dont like to use machines on them when they got nice stuff inside ;-)
here is before and after:

Re: Amber with fossils
Thank you.. but its tons of patience and practice a lot that is behind it.. so its just to start to play with it and try and fail..
When it comes to Amber.. i prefer to use no machines.. the material is so soft and easy to work with by hand.. and then all you need is good quality sand files and sandpaper... 400 - 600 - 800 - grit will be ok.. take your time with it and use the 10X loupe to look for scratches.. when your happy with it.. buff over the amber with the buffer block the girls use to polish their nails with.. poof. you got a nice shiny surface.. :-)
